Cultural Trauma: A Case Study on the Forced Migraion and Assimilation Policies of Turks in Bulgaria

This study examines the assimilation policies and forced migration process targeting Turks in Bulgaria in 1989 through field-based data within the framework of cultural trauma theory. The research employs qualitative methods, specifically in-depth interviews. Interviews were conducted between 2019 and 2024 in Bulgaria (Sofia, Plovdiv, and Kardzhali), Turkiye (Sakarya), and online platforms. A total of forty participants' narratives were recorded and transcribed, with sixteen interviews analyzed using discourse analysis included in this article. The article first contextualizes the historical background of assimilation policies, then integrates key concepts of cultural trauma theory with narratives collected from the field. In this context, the transformations in individual identities and the imprints left on collective memory by assimilation policies are analyzed through the lens of cultural trauma theory. While decoding the societal markers of assimilation policies and forced migration through narratives, the study also evaluates the intergenerational transmission of cultural trauma and the role of memory carriers in this process. As a phenomenon that profoundly affects both individuals and collective identity, the process has deeply shaped the memories of Turks in Bulgaria. In this regard, the research aims to contribute uniquely to the literature by applying a cultural trauma theory perspective.
