A Comparative Analysis of the Contradiction between Sovereignty and Freedom from the Perspectives of Machiavelli, Hobbes, and La Boétie

This study examines the tension between sovereignty and freedom through a comparative analysis of Niccolò Machiavelli, Thommas Hobbes, and Étienne de La Boétie’s political thought. While Machiavelli and Hobbes, who laid the foundations of modern sovereignty, argue that individual freedom can be sacrificed for the common good, La Boétie asserts that no sovereign power can be legitimate without the consent of the governed. The main aim of this study is to compare these three thinkers’ perspectives on sovereignty and freedom, questioning the impact of modern state sovereignty on individual liberties. By analyzing the differences between Machiavelli and Hobbes’ state-centered theories and La Boétie’s individual-centered critique, the study explores the position of sovereignty against individual rights. For this purpose, the study employs an interpretative and comparative analysis method. The primary sources include Machiavelli’s The Prince, Hobbes’ Leviathan, and La Boétie’s Discourse on Voluntary Servitude, through which the historical and theoretical framework of the sovereignty-freedom relationship is examined. The findings indicate that while Machiavelli and Hobbes emphasize a strong state, La Boétie highlights individual resistance. In this context, the study reveals how sovereignty, within the modern state paradigm, inherently conflicts with freedom.
