Obedience to Political Authority in the Context of Religion-Power Relationship

In this study, obedience to political authority is analyzed in the context of religion-power relationship. In this context, firstly, the concepts of power and authority are analyzed through the definitions of Plato, Niccolò Machiavelli, Max Weber and Michel Foucault. Then, the trial process of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann was summarized and Hannah Arendt’s findings within the scope of obedience to authority were included. Also, Stanley Milgram's Milgram experiment in 1961 and Philip Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment in 1971 were analyzed on an experimental basis. As a result of these experiments, people's tendencies towards obedience to authority were revealed with numerical metrics and it was concluded that people have a high tendency towards the use of force. Finally, the issue of obedience to political authority in sacred texts is analyzed through the Bible and the Qur'an. It was found that the passages in the New Testament section of the Bible command unquestioning and absolute obedience to political authority. It has been concluded that the Qur'an, on the other hand, conditions obedience to political authority, on the condition of acting in accordance with the Qur'an.
